Alan is a South African artist who paints landscapes in a traditional style, quite realistic or naturalistic, with maybe a touch of impressionism. He does not necessarily follow the formal rules of composition too closely, but generally looks for a view which encapsulates a particular sense of place. His detail in the vegetation and other landscape elements in his paintings is meticulous, and his renditions of clouds are superb. Each painting begins as a drawing, often from a photograph, to capture the basic composition. 

Broad underpainting is then applied to establish the basic hues and tones. Eventually the work is honed, in what is probably best described as a meditation on colour balance. The expressed hope is that the viewer gets the same feeling of quiet and meditation from Alan’s paintings that he gets from nature. The enduring aspects of a landscape are portrayed, rather than fleeting moments of human or animal influence, and leave the landscape open to imagination, rather than tied to events.
